VMware Introduction

VMware is a suite of software products that provide an additional layer of abstraction between the hardware and the operating system. It allows for multiple flavors of an operating system or for completely different operating systems to run simultaneously on the same hardware. VMware essentially creates a virtual infrastructure for your software to run on. This virtual infrastructure eliminates servers that solely exist to provide unique operating environments for special applications. By using VMware, the number of servers required to support your business will be completely independent of the number of operating environments your suite of applications need to have. This will greatly decrease the number of servers on your network and lower all the costs associated with maintaining and upgrading those servers.

VMware can also provide an additional layer of abstraction between hardware and your storage area network solutions. VMware has successfully completed comprehensive interoperability testing with the industry's leading storage area network (SAN) vendors. It has been qualified for EMC, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Hitachi Data Systems, HP, IBM and Network Appliance storage systems.  VMware consolidates and optimizes storage resources to increase utilization and availability as well as enable businesses to scale their storage infrastructures to match dynamic changes in their business.

In addition to consolidating application and storage servers, VMware provides advantages for testing and deploying new software. Some of the issues that stand in the way of software development include: contention for limited hardware resources, mismatched development and production environments, inadequate staging that makes it riskier to deploy new applications, and communication issues in distributed development teams. VMware resolves these issues, providing a more reliable and less resource demanding strategy for testing and deploying software. VMware software encapsulates complete test platform applications and data into files. These files can be easily stored, suspended, resumed, and transported between physical servers. Due to the isolation guaranteed by VMware software, multiple virtual test platforms can run on the same physical server without interfering with each other. Furthermore, virtual infrastructure has many functions specifically designed for optimizing test and development environments - from system snapshot to support for system level debugging.

Using VMware, IT managers can improve all aspects of business continuity, such as:

  • Faster and less expensive disaster recovery due to hardware independence between primary and failover servers

  • Elimination of scheduled hardware downtime and dramatic reduction in scheduled software downtime

  • Single point of control for managing all the virtual machines and monitoring their host machines

  • Encapsulation of complete machines into files for capture and recovery

  • Simplified and repeatable automated processes

VMware is an independent subsidiary of EMC, the world leader in products, services, and solutions for information storage and its management.

PCS Initiative ...

Precision Computer Services is a VMware Premier Partner. PCS has realized the benefits that VMware provides to businesses world wide. It has taken strong measures to fully support the integration of VMware into your IT infrastucture. We have a large staff of VMware certified engineers trained in evaluating how your enterprise can take full advantage of virtual infrastucture. We want you to get the most from VMware products long after the initial sale and installation and we are dedicated to ensuring that any issues are resolved to your satisfaction.

Capacity Planning and Assessments

Precision Computer Services provides Asset Assessments, which is considered the Blue Print for proper planning in addressing your server consolidation requirements. This process creates a baseline for discussion and evaluation of your environment for potential consolidation opportunities. This is an unobtrusive process to your environment, yet it provides the opportunity to properly discuss all options and review your RIO.

POC

PCS offers Proof of Concepts in order to properly evaluate the impact of Server Virtualization and Consolidation. Many of these POCs can be performed with or without the clients hardware depending upon demo scheduling and availability.

Design

PCS’s design processes draw upon the results of the assessments as well as your overall IT requirements. The design includes discussions with OEMs and your IT staff. This will allow PCS to better understand the challenges and compatibility requirements of your environment. SOWs are created leading into project plans and discussion for implementation.

Training

PCS offers two types of training however we are more than willing to customize our offerings to our Clients. The 1st is the Jump Start training, which gives your IT staff the necessary knowledge to understand, deploy and support your VMware environment. The second is VMware onsite training at our training Facility by a VMware certified Instructor.

Implementation

PCS works closely with the client to create project plans in relation to SOWs. Project managers are assigned, project status meetings are scheduled, and post project implementation meetings are held in order to insure customer satisfaction. Our goal is to insure that your experience with PCS and VMware meets or exceeds your expectations.

Managing and documentation

PCS provides RUN BOOK documentation so that your IT staff can properly manage and support your VMware environment. This information includes but is not limited to, diagrams, server config, both physical and virtual information, wiring, storage, back up procedures, power up and power down as well as contact information for OEM and PCS support.

Critical Care Support

Precision Computer Services offers 7X24 support and additional variations of VMware critical support. PCS can customize your Care support programs to include hardware, VMware, other operating systems and applications. This will allow your IT staff to properly support your critical applications and servers in a timely and efficient manner.

PCS has experienced SAN Architects, VCPs, HP ASEs, MSCEs, IBM, EMC certified professionals to make your virtualization project successful with the maximum ROI.

Benefits of VMware

Virtual infrastructure simplifies IT so companies leverage their storage, network, and computing resources to control costs and respond faster. In a virtual infrastructure, users see resources as if they were dedicated to them. The administrator manages and optimizes resources globally across the enterprise.

VMware's virtual infrastructure architecture enables business to lower IT cost through increased efficiency, flexibility and responsiveness. Managing a virtual infrastructure enables IT to connect resources to business needs quickly. With virtual infrastructure, IT organizations can provision new services and change the amount of resources dedicated to a software service. Your data center can be treated as a single pool of processing, storage and networking power.

Adopting virtual infrastructure lets IT be responsive to business needs:

• 60-80% utilization rates for Intel servers up from today's 5-15%
• Provisioning times for new applications measured in tens of seconds, not days
• Response times for change requests measured in minutes
• Zero-downtime hardware maintenance without waiting for maintenance windows

How Virtual Infrastructure Works
The VMware virtual hardware platform implemented by VMware's virtual machines makes virtual infrastructure possible. It creates a uniform hardware image – implemented in software – that operating systems and applications run on. On top of this platform, VMware's family of products provides management and provisioning of virtual machines, continuous workload consolidation across physical servers and VMotion™ technology for virtual machine mobility.

With virtual infrastructure, IT organizations can provision new services and change the amount of resources dedicated to a software service. Hardware management is completely separated from software management, and hardware equipment can be treated as a single pool of processing, storage and networking power to be allocated and de-allocated on the fly to various software services.

How Can VMware Help You?

VMware helps enterprises lower costs, respond faster and deliver flexible and consistent IT.

Lower Costs
• You don't pay for what you don't need
• You get more out of your IT investment dollars
• Easier to separate the strategic IT investments from the commodity IT functions

Respond faster to business demand
• Integration with partners and customers is easier
• Expansion or M&A activities can happen faster
• Resources can be deployed or moved quickly to the business units that need them

Deliver IT that's more flexible and consistent
• Leverages technologies you are already investing in: SAN, vLAN
• Gives you lower-cost platform options
• It lowers risk and increases responsiveness
